CALL FOR PAPERS Announcement for the Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies 2017 special issue Brand China: A New Voice to the World? Guest Editors Qing Cao (Durham University, UK), and Doreen Wu (Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong) China was propelled to global prominence in recent decades largely by its economic clout rather than by a politico-military-technological pre-eminence. The Economist (2 May 2014) predicts China will overtake the US economy by 2019, however as ‘a developing country’ China is at pains managing its own transformations while trying to curve out an international identity amidst its growing global roles. This special issue proposes to look at the issue of China’s brand image by focusing on how the formation of China’s international image is fused with the creation ofnew identities within China. The primary aim of this issue is to examine the internal dynamics of change, rather than external geopolitical and economic shift of power, in exploring the creation of an emerging ‘China brand’ that will inevitably impact upon how China will be looked at and interacted with in its ascent to global prominence. The special issue is concerned especially with how China’s fresh multiple self-perceptions,international outlooks and presentations by diverse producers converge ordiverge from its deep-seated historical assumptions and beliefs – how or whether the present is meaningfully connected to, regenerated from and rise above the past. But more crucially, how China’s self-portrayals are communicated to the world and interact with the current prevalent Western-defined, modernity-oriented assumptions and values. The special issue examines how China’s political, cultural and business elites see China’s past, present and its positions in the world and its future directions, and considers the consequences of the ‘new voice’ from China in the fast-changing world. Topics to be discussed Topics to be discussed in the special issue can include (but are not confined to) the following: · China’s external communication – multiple voices and agencies · China’s cultural heritage and national identities · Revival of Confucianism and its contemporary relevance · China’s regional identities, diversities and unity · China’s creative industry and cultural capital · Issues of China model, road, or experiences Submission deadlines 30th November 2016 Submission of full paper 31st January 2017 Completion of review and notifications to authors 30th April 2017 Submission of final revised manuscript The special issue is expected to be published in 2017 Submission process All manuscripts should be made via Critical Arts online ScholarOne system (http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/rcrc20#.Vyh1WU1-PIU), indicating clearly on the cover page 'for the 2017 special issue 'Brand China'.
